I haven't even managed to download my images yet... But I know I've got an absolutely identical swan pic !!
Tom, I'm happy to share experiences of my 100-400 ii. I'll be using mine at Biggin Hill of course.

Is that the one which you showed me at lunch?
A valid comparison of the 300 f/4 against the 100-400 maybe? I believe that we were both using 1.4 extenders, although mine is the Mk II version.

Thanks, David. It looks as though we all got that swan.

Mike & Dave,
Some great images there.
How do I put up an image or two on the forum?

Yes it is... I managed to download my images into LR last night but haven't done anything with them yet. Initial impressions however are that most birds were too far away for any decent photos this time, even at 560mm. You will have been much better off with the crop sensor on your 7D I was also experimenting with some different settings on Sunday - some clearly worked better than others ! LOL
These were images taken on my last visit - the birds were clearly a lot closer, and I think there was more activity ! https://www.flickr.com/photos/rose_atki ... 513820857/

I think the next time I go to Sevenoaks I'll take my EOS 550D with my 100-400mm and 1.4 extender. Even if the extender doesn't work with the 550 I should get better shots with the combo. It won't be as heavy to start with

There is no reason why the extender will not work with the 550D, it is only with lenses where there is an incompatibility and it will only function with the white L variety. The main problem you will face is that with an effective aperture of f/8 at the long end, AF will not work as the 550D's focussing system ceases to work with smaller apertures beyond f/5.6, potentially negating the benefit of the extender. On the other hand, you will be shooting at infinity anyway, so you should be able to switch to manual focus. Just try not to nudge the focussing ring too often .....
