Yes. Initial idea was to turn it mono but it didn't work so looked at other options.

Sure, it was one of the Aviary presets (though cant remember which one off hand) with a decrease in overall contrast and some sharpening. Tried to go for a film emulation without going "full Instagram" :)

Thought a dated/retro look would suit the scene.

Was it a cameraphone shot? The on;y Aviary photo editor I can find is a mobile app.

Nope it was my 550d (and macro lens, randomly) but Flickr uses aviary as it's built in image editing tool. Not good for much, lots of garish filters and silly "stickers" etc. but for basic tweaks its fine. I tend to use it when I either don't have time or don't think the shot is worth serious attention in photoshop.

I've been keeping in contact with Simon Clarkson (who attended the club/forum a few times but can't commit because of his work schedule) and we've been swapping ideas for landscape places. I mentioned Mayfield to him and he's posted his results on flickr.

Though he admits he missed sunset because of parking problems it's still nice to see a different view of the field and what could be achievable at that time of day.

I went to the Lavender Hop Shop near Shoreham the other night as a potential sunset location. Was disappointed as light wasnt good and lavender had already started to be farmed so fields were not uniform. Plus I was reminded how high a standard you have set David so therefore swapped to my aquarium shot.

Good to know that Simon is still around. Pity about his work schedule, though.

The hour before sunrise and the hour after sunset can be very good for photography, as Simon has demonstrated. Light is reflected from clouds as the sun shines from below the horizon and creates all sorts of hues, particularly at dusk. Even though the eye does not always see the colours, a long exposure reveals them. I have a shot taken at Kimmeridge when it was nearly pitch black as the sun had set around 45 minutes earlier, but there are some lovely peach tones in the sky.

I think I remember the image you're referring to.

With this image I wasn't sure how much processing had gone into it. Some haloing around the tree maybe, particularly the bottom branches? But still a pretty result. If I wasn't loathe to repeat a subject in the 365 I'd be tempted to go back!

#197 - Lattice

Postby davidc » Mon 22 Jul 2013, 14:40

This is an image taken with a scanning electron microscope of individual atoms.

Actually it's not, it's some ball magnets I bought online but I pretended it was atoms when setting it up :)
