Although no date has been announced yet, a new photography programme is coming to BBC4 this year. There will be contestants facing weekly challenges and an overall winner but no one will be evicted from the show. The host will be Rankin, the ubiquitous British photograher of choice for TV it seems. More information and an interview with one of the participants is on the Amateur Photographer website:

Thanks, Tina. I believed AP when it said there was no date given for the show and did not bother to check. The programmes are welcome, just a shame there are only four episodes.

There is an interview with Rankin on the AP website, although they are still not saying that the first episode is on Monday!
In the interview, Rankin says that he "does not want to be the Simon Cowell of photography". Quite right, although it is Greg Wallace that he should avoid emulating.

Did many people see this?
As a comparison to "Master of Photography" it was a vast improvement. Im not keen on the combative style of those knockout shows where a contestant leaves each week. Certain things Rankin said last night felt like he was acknowledging that. Much better to mentor them over time and see their progression. I think the pace of the show was quite fast and packed in alot of assignments, surely BBC4 dont need to rush these things??
Looking forward to the following episodes.

Paul, like you I thought this was a better format than MoP, far better to see their journey through the process! While I liked the pace as this introduced a range of assignments/challenges that showed us upfront where they were in and out of their comfort zones. It would have been good to get a little bit more of their thought processes when taking and processing the photos - also how much were they directed in the post processing/image selection! Maybe future episodes will address this by reducing the number of assignments!
I have set a series link to ensure I don't miss the other episodes

HI people, the first time I tried watching the show I kept on falling asleep, but I was sure glad I recorded the show and could actually watch it all the way through. What I missed was seeing all the pics they they took. I suppose that can't be helped , but I found the whole show really constructive and will be watching every show. Wally

I can't say I agreed with the judges final selection(s) - Maybe I didn't understand the brief I thought Paul would have been a worthy winner! He embraced feedback, took on and excelled in genres that were outside of his comfort zones and produced a strong portfolio. Georgie for me would have been a close second! Given the subjective nature of our hobby I'm sure you also have your take on the show, who was your stand out contestant and why? Well done to Tyrone & Jackson!

Funny that Frank I thought the same, and then I thought perhaps Rankin thought the young chaps had a better chance of making a career out of the experience than Paul did. I just read that Paul had post traumatic stress disorder not that I noticed. he was very cool calm and collected I thought and did all his projects quite beautifully. lets hope he did it for the experience of doing all those projects. If he goes further (lets hope he does) his appearance on TV will be so useful to him. He has the Personality.
Great show much better than the big prize competitive one. Good to see all the contestants striving so well. Rankin did really well don't you think.
He allowed them to think for themselves with only so much pressure.
