This post by guest editor Gordon Lewis at The Online Photographer certainly struck a chord with me. How do you find images taken a while back? Lightroom's tagging feature is powerful, but it does depend on on a systematic and comprehensive approach to add relevant tags when images are first imported. All that takes time and effort. The payback, if it happens at all, is often not until some years later when searching for a particular shot.

Re: Finding Images
I don't tag mine and just have everything catalogued in date order, it works for me

You must have a fantasticly good memory for when you took a photo. In the early days it is what I did for a time, but after a while I found it increasingly difficult when I had more shots. I am not even sure that I can now recall everything I have taken which I considered worthwhile at the time. Lightroom has been a godsend - when I have catalogued images correctly that is.
The alternative, I suppose, is to delete all the rubbish so that there is less to remember. That would account for 99.99% of my output and simplfy the task enormously.

Re: Finding Images
When I was writing for several UK & US tropical fish magazines with some 400 images in print a year, I needed to find fish images fast so that the editors could have the images the same day they requested them. On my shoots at public aquariums, aquarium shops and hobbyist's homes I usually ended up with 200 digital images or more each time. I named the best images (~20 to 30) each time. Then I just used the Search feature on Windows to find all images of a particular fish that I had on my hard drive. Worked very well.
Currently for CCC also using a naming system but tending to move images with potential to another folder for further development.
