Tanzania Safari - Walkabout in Arusha Game Park

Some years ago, I joined the German JBL group for a wonderful Workshop in Tanzania.
JBL trades in pet products from aquariums to fish food and more.
I flew from London to Addis Ababa and then by small plane to Arusha.
Arusha Game park, with no lions about, was selected for a three day walkabout.
We were looking principally for small animal life that included fish.
Water parameters in various locations were recorded.

Tanzania Safari - Snorkeling or Diving off Zanzibar Island

We took a small aeroplane from Arusha Game Park to Zanzibar for 3 glorious days on a sunny beach.
Comfortable beach huts and a large sea fronted restaurant provided wonderfully fresh food.
Mornings were spent snorkeling or diving in crystal clear, 25 C warm waters.
The Indian Ocean lapping Zanzibar was full of colourful, easy to see fish that extended to harmless giant whale sharks.
We even had time to explore the historic Zanzibar town and discover a wealth of spices such as pepper & more in the spice gardens.
Fabulous!

Tanzania Safari - Snorkelling and Diving In Lake Tanganyika

Another aeroplane flight took us to Kigoma, Lake Tanganyika via a plane change at Dar es Salaam.
Stayed at the very comfortable Kigoma Hilltop Hotel just a 10-minute drive from the lake shore.
Deep water Lake Tanganyika is home to several hundred different species of cichlid fish occupying different biotopes.
I did some snorkeling form the lake shore but it was difficult to see many fish. The divers were more successful in seeing cichlids.

I was the only one of the group to bring a fishing rod and a fish trap with me, both of which proved very successful.
The trap baited with a fish head caught a half dozen different species of small cichlids that I photographed and released.
With the rod, I caught a spectacular, young, ~ 50 cm, emperor cichlid (Boulengerochromis microlepis) that I also released back to the lake.

Certainly enjoyed the 3 days at Lake Tanganyika that included a trip to a big local market and some excursions into the bush.

Tanzania Safari - Mnarani Turtle Conservation Project

In Zanzibar, I visited the Mnarani Turtle Conservation Project where young rescued turtles are housed in large ponds.
Green Turtles lay their eggs in excavated holes in the sand in February to July.
Unfortunately, the turtle eggs are sometimes collected and used by local residents as a food source.

Attached is an image of the small planes that we used to fly between destinations
