Chicago in 2 hour slots - Architecture Boat Ride

Chicago was a two day stopover on the way to Big Sky and onwards to Yellowstone Park.
Got to see quite a lot of Chicago in several two hour slots.
One slot in late afternoon was the Architecture Boat Tour for views of Chicago’s most famous buildings
that included Sears Tower, Old Post Office, 360 Chicago Observation Deck, Wrigley Building, and more.
It ended with a splendid view of the skyline from the Chicago River.

Chicago in 2 hour slots – Shedd Aquarium visit

On my travels, I always scheduled exploration of public aquarium and/ or visits to marine hobbyists to photograph their aquariums in their homes.
These were then written up & published by various UK and US tropical fish magazines.
Recently, during this Covid lock down, I have compiled many of my published feature articles into a dozen, colourful, 140 page photo books.
Here, my first two hour slot in Chicago was taken up at the Shedd Aquarium that opened in 1930.
Among the many exhibits that I rather enjoyed were the Oceanarium, the Caribbean Reef and the Malawi cichlids display, to name but a few.

Chicago in 2 hour slots – Art Institute of Chicago

Spent the 3rd two hour slot at the Art Institute of Chicago exploring its many gallery rooms.
Enjoyed the works of masters, old and new.
The Grand Staircase built in 1910 was pretty charming too.

Morning Iggy

I really like the staircase image! So much so that I did a quick photoshop job on it as its symmetry really appealed to me. Plus you have someone in a red dress looking at the central statue so I decided to give it a square crop. Hope you dont mind :)

Hi Paul,
Thank you for taking time to look at and comment on my images which is very much appreciated.
I do like how you have cropped the image to highlight the lady in red with the statue.
One does lose a lot of the staircase tough. Perhaps a rectangular crop might work better?

According to our previous speaker Paul Sanders, I should have composed the image better before pressing the shutter.
I did take 4 other images of the staircase that were busier, but preferred this one.

I do like the couple viewing the paintings image better, which I did straightened out a day after posting.

Best wishes,
Iggy

Hi Paul,
Further to your suggestions, I have cropped the original image, keeping more of the stairs in the image.
I cropped some of the annoying banisters off too and went for a more symmetrical rectangular look.
Look forward to your comments.
Best wishes,
Iggy

Iggy, I really like this image and I like your latest crop!
And just to prove that we all would have taken something different from the same scene, In my crop I have cropped out the people in the bottom left as they distract, I have also burned in the pics in that space as they drag your eye down and away. the lady in the red dress is nicely lined up on the third, Ideally I would have had the banisters handrails coming directly out of the top coroners but they wouldn't line up in the crop. I'm sure others would have different views on it but at the end of the day it's your image :)

Hi Frank,
Thank you for kindly participating by working on the image of the Grand Staircase that I shot at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Your cropping and tidy up has enhanced the image and given the lady in red a more dominant role which Paul's crop also did.
I have been lazy by doing minimal tidy up with my TPR images and might have taken them further in preparation for a possible competition.
Both of you have made me see this image in a different light. So you never know where you might see it next!

A possible title for this image is "Going for Bust". I just cannot get my mind past that title.
I look forward to anyone's suggestion for a suitable title.

Thanks,
Iggy

Chicago in 2 hour slots – The Jazz Showcase Club

A trip to a city abroad is incomplete without some live music.
Hence, the last two hour slot was at the Jazz Showcase, one of the oldest clubs in Chicago.
Photography at clubs is difficult with a hand-held camera in low light.
Sometimes though, one can get lucky with some light from an unlikely source!

To throw my final tuppence in I think a blend of both Franke's image and your crop Iggy would work. By that I mean I prefer the expanse of Iggy's crop as it allows the eye to wander a bit more and appreciate all the lines but I also agree that the people in the bottom left do distract. So maybe burn those people out a little more.

I can hear a judge's voice chuckling at the title which may cause them to view it as a less serious image. Maybe a more subtle title, although I can only think of "Self reflection" , "A study of lines" or "Mirror image".
