#68 - Odd One Out

Postby davidc » Thu 14 Mar 2013, 08:50

A grim, miserable day in Dusseldorf. I found it very, very difficult to find anything of interest to shoot on my first wander around the town but this shocking pink mini stuck out in a long line of parked cars.

#69 - Statue

Postby davidc » Thu 14 Mar 2013, 08:51

Another dreary afternoon spent wandering around Dusseldorf and I must admit it was extremely challenging to find anything of interest - or any shops open which surprised me, I assumed these days everything opened 7 days a week! Ended up going for a photographer's image of this statue in the park.

#70 - The Chase

Postby davidc » Thu 14 Mar 2013, 08:52

Today was the journey home from Dusseldorf and I spent hours travelling. The only time I had for a photo was during a blizzard at passport control - thankfully these seagulls starting fighting over scraps of bread to give me a shot for today!

Snapped this while we were crossing the English Channel at a painfully slow pace - it's the busiest shipping channel in the world and it was EXTREMELY foggy. The view looking out over the channel was quite spooky, you could barely see a thing!

Now if only someone will pay me millions for it!

What surprised me once I got it onto the PC was how pronounced the vignetting is. It was shot on my 10-22 and barely touched in photoshop so that vignette is almost entirely from the lens.

It turns out my 10-22 is now broken and will not focus to infinity at any focal length bar 22mm. Need to take it in to get fixed :(

Vignetting can be an issue with wide-angle lenses. This is due to a combination of the necessary optical design and sensor edge performance with non perpendicular light rays. It can be fixed and if you use Lightroom there are specific controls to allow this. The nature of the scene made the vignetting more apparent in this instance, but it would have been there in other images taken with the lens.

Sorry to hear that your lens is broken, but you will be able to acquire a new one just as soon as you can emulate Gursky's success!

Love this shot. The focusing is spot on and the way the gulls are circling the central one with the food really draws me in. We done on getting a good shot on what sounds like a very hard day.

Something I'd wanted to try for ages but needed to have plenty of time to make sure I could clean up any mess :)

Turns out it's really quick and easy to do. Just put newspaper down! Now I have a new work of art to put on the wall!

I also created a timelapse video showing me create it - check it out here:

Strobist -
YN560-II right on 1/128th power
YN460 left on lowest power (presumably 1/128th but it's not nicely marked!)
Both at 45 degrees to camera pointing at canvas directly approx 1m away. Damn hard to light this in a way that didn't give loads of weird highlights!

Like this.

The link has extraneous HTML and does not seem to be a valid URL.

Corrected.

edit: at least, I've made the link valid now but because the fun police at RBS blacklist youtube I can't be 100% certain it works. Should do though.
