17 December 2014 - Members's Evening: Mobile Phone Images

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 02 Dec 2014, 12:38

On 17 December, which will be our last meeting before the two week Xmas break, we will have the next of this season's members' evenings which have proved very popular in the past. This will be the mobile phone image competition which has been rescheduled from the original date of 5 November. It will be an informal competition judged by ourselves to choose the best ones. It is often said that the best camera is the one you have with you, so we should all have pictures taken during our everyday lives which we can show to each other.

In order to set up the competition, we are looking to receive entries in advance. These should either be submitted on CD/DVD or memory stick at the meeting on 10 December or via e-mail to croydoncameraclub@gmail.com by midnight on Saturday, 13 December 2014. Usual competition rules mostly apply, with a couple of differences.

  • Each member can enter four images instead of the usual three;
  • The larger 1400 x 1050 image will not be required on this occasion.
To summarise:

Entries should consist of up to four images which should conform to the following criteria:

  • Maximum dimensions of 1,024 pixels horizontally and 768 pixels vertically
  • sRGB colour space
  • Image file names should be a two digit number to show the order in which it is to be projected, followed by a space and the title (e.g. 01 Rusty Nail.jpg).
Mobile phone cameras have made significant advances in recent years and in the 1 November edition of Amateur Photographer had a number of articles about how professional photographers are using their phones to shoot stock images. While the price now paid for such images has fallen in recent years, technical requirements definitely have not and it is testament to the quality that can be achieved. I look forward to seeing what our members can produce.
