2014 Master Trophy Competition Theme

Postby Mike Farley » Sun 22 Sep 2013, 11:31

The subject theme for the next Master Trophy competition which will be held on 9 July 2014 is Three. Members can interpret the theme as they wish, but one of the assessment criteria for the judge will relevance.

Members may submit a set of three images either as prints, DPI or slides and can be a mixture, e.g. two prints and one DPI. Entries must consist of entirely new work which has not been previously submitted to any other club competition. (Entries will be subsequently eligible for use in the monthly internal competitions and exhibition.)

The trophy will be awarded to the person who achieves the highest aggregate score. In the event of a tie, the judge will be asked to re-assess the tying entrants' photographs to select the overall winner.

Re: 2014 Master Trophy Competition Theme

I have received a query about whether the images for this competition will be judged individually or as a set. Since the answer might be of interest to others, particularly members who have joined more recently, I'll give the response here.

The club has two types of annual competition which are held during club meetings. Those for the set theme, monochrome and nature trophies all require entrants to submit new work which has not previously been used in competition or the club's exhibition. The three images will be marked individually and, as already stated, the person with the highest aggregate score is awarded the trophy. The only time that the three images will be viewed as a group is when there is a tie for first place, when the judge will be asked to decide who has submitted the best set of images overall. It is not necessary to use three images which work together as a panel and/or have similar subject matter.

The other class of annual trophy are for the image of the year competitions. These are held during the short summer season to find the best overall image submitted during the most recent monthly print and DPI competitions which have just completed. In this instance, all the work will have been seen previously and it is up to participants to choose which three images they wish to be considered. On these occasions, the images are not marked and the judge is requested to select first, second and third, and three highly commendeds. The trophy is awarded to the author of the best picture, so there is no possibility of a tie.
