Camera Equipment Insurance

Postby Tina » Wed 16 Jun 2021, 11:55

Hi All
Can anyone recommend insurance for camera equipment?
Graham and I seem to have accumulated quite a bit recently, so I think it would be prudent to get separate specialist insurance.
Thank you.

Hi Tina, You may have explored this already, it's worth checking with your current contents insurer to see if they will insure them outside the house. This is something I have been doing for a number of years - although I have never had to claim so don't know outcomes! I have had to buy separate insurance as a one off for my gear when traveling abroad. While I can't comment on these here's ones AP have listed in their article https://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/technique/expert_advice/best-camera-insurance-deals-148548 and here's one I came across while looking for content insurance https://www.hiscox.co.uk/home-insurance/contents-insurance/camera-insurance Hope this helps, sorry couldn't give a personal rec. Graham L, may be able to help!

That's the only time when you find out how good an insurance company really is.

As with anything, online reviews might help identify some of the dodgier companies. As Frank says, most home insurers have all-risk options for high value equipment which could represent better value than a separate policy. It might be preferable to set it up at renewal in case there is an admin charge to alter an existing policy.

Hi Frank and Mike
Thank you both for your replies. Our home contents insurance is quite good for items outside the home, but Graham has bought himself some high end kit so I think a specialist insurer might be better.
As it happens Wex have just sent out an email promoting Photoguard with a 10% discount so I might have a look at them.

I have just been through the biennial round of changing house and contents insurer due to the industry's dubious practice of quoting low, hiking the price by a bit for the second year and then putting it through the roof in year 3. I wish my income went up in line with insurance premiums.* As a result, I have seen that quite a few policies, the premium ones especially, protect individual items up to £3k or £4k outside the home. That would probably cover most items. However, adding just a few more valuable items can increase the premium considerably.

* From next January, insurance companies will no longer be able to charge existing customers more than new ones. I wonder what wheeze they will come up with instead?
