Digital SLR Photography magazine no more

Postby Paul Heester » Fri 12 Feb 2021, 11:09

Ive been a long time subscriber to Digital SLR Photography magazine and have recently received their last ever issue. To quote their letter "the past 12 months have been incredibly testing for print magazines and, try as we might, the decline in the market has bitten hard" I found their mix of news, tutorials, reviews and interviews refreshing.

So can anyone else recommend an alternative print magazine that they enjoy?

I subscribe to three magazines. My favourite is definitely Black and White Photography. During the past year, long time editor Elizabeth Roberts retired and Mark Bentley has taken over. Curiously, he does not have the title of editor but the change has made the content more accessible. The magazine concentrates on contemporary photography and some of Roberts' choices were at the more alternative end of the spectrum. There are some good regular columnists such as Eddie Ephraums and Tim Clinch who always contribute worthwhile editorial.

Next up is Amateur Photographer. Some of the articles can be a bit lightweight but there is a wide spread of topics. Some of the content, reviews and techniques in particular, is published free of charge on the website which gives an idea of style. What you miss, though, are the many articles about photographers and photography which feature in the magazine. I have met some of the editorial team and know the editor, which is how I got Croydon CC included in the regular "Meet the Club" feature last year when we had our 130th anniversary.

Finally, the magazine which is probably closest to Digital SLR Photography in concept is Digital Camera World. I tend not to spend quite as much time with that one but there is always something of interest. There has been a regular feature about Quintin Lake's walk around the coast of Britain but as he completed the trip last September that series will be concluding shortly.

Incidentally, I first came across Digital SLR Photography magazine when I went on a course with Mark Bauer (the most recent speaker in our biennial Wratten Lecture) and he was a contributor. We were given free copies and it included an article by Mark. One of the accompanying photos had been taken with a medium format film camera! It was a Pentax 67 if I recall correctly, so at least the SLR bit was apposite.

Thanks for the detailed suggestions. Im sure I used to get Amateur Photographer years back so will probably skip that but will have a sneaky browse of the other two in a newsagent/supermarket first.

Digital Camera World usually comes with a set of "Tips" cards as a freebie. If I recall correctly from those heady days when I used to frequent such places as W H Smith, that means it comes in a sealed plastic bag which will make browsing more difficult if someone has not already opend one of the packets. Black and White Photography usually comes without the accoutrement of a bag, except this month which has its annual photography holiday and workshop booklet.

Both are available with a six month discounted subscription from magazine.co.uk, so trying them at leisure in the comfort of your own home will not be that expensive. The link below takes you to the photography section which has a round-up of the magazines still in publication.

Incidentally, if you do feel the temptation of Amateur Photographer, a three month subscription is cheaper when obtained directly from the magazine's website.
