I can't find sufficient info to decide if PS elements 11 is better or worse than photoshop cs4!

Part of me wants to take advantage of the bargain price, part of me worries if I truly need it!

Unless you want the Content Aware Spot Healing tool, there is probably very little else which PSE11 can do which CS4 cannot.

As an update, PSE11 will be able to convert Raw files from the latest cameras, whereas CS4 is limited to those which were in production when support ceased on the release of CS5. PSE11 also has the latest Raw processing updates introduced for ACR 7. That said, the PS Raw conversion function is basic and a better option is to acquire Lightroom 4 to get the fully featured version. Cameraworld is currently selling the full version of LR4 at £68, which is quite a bargain. Combined with the Amazon offer, most post processing requirements can be fulfilled for a little over £100.

Hi Mike

I have a new camera- Canon EOS 6D.
I currently have Photoshop Elements 10.
In your expert opnion would it be better if I bought Lightroom 4 to be able to convert Raw files?

Thanks
Tina

Hi Tina

Congratulations on the new camera. I have heard good reports of it and been tempted myself. I look forward to seeing the results.

I would always recommend LR4 for the conversion of Raw files, mainly for the reasons which I gave previously. The Raw conversion is so powerful and adaptable that I find quite often I do not need to do any further processing in Photoshop, as I mentioned when I did my demonstration at club last month. LR4 also has a history function, so it is always possible to go back to a previous interim point which is not possible with the PSE converter and only available by the use of snapshots in full Photoshop. In addition, I like LR's library management functionality when selecting images as it provides a lot of options and is much better than the PSE organiser. If you do your own printing, LR supports printer profiles which was dropped from PSE a while back.

As you have PSE 10, there is little reason to upgrade if you go for LR4. The main change was to Raw processing, but you will not want to use that in preference to LR.

Of course, LR has a learning curve, so I would recommend Scott Kelby's book as it gives a step by step guide to follow.

Agree about the information, very good. However personally I'm holding off purchasing LR4 until LR5 is out and they've definitely fixed the poor performance. I've seen LR3 and LR4 running side by side and it seems to be a big step back in application performance. LR5 is probably due out pretty soon if they follow their established release calendar.

Thanks for the tipoffs though :)

Adobe has a two year release cycle and LR5/PS7 is not due until around April 2014. Running LR4 on a relatively modestly powered machine, which I use for my public presentations on Lightroom and Raw processing, I have not noticed any significant performance issues. Going from the Library module to Develop can be a bit slow the first time, but it is OK after that.

Thanks for the positive feedback.

I have just checked the release notes and some performance issues were resolved when version 4.1 was issued, which might explain Dave's earlier observations if the comparison with LR3 was done with the initial version of LR4.

This is what Adobe had to say:

"Addressed performance issues in Lightroom 4, particularly when loading GPS track logs, using a secondary monitor, and the controls within the Develop module."
