Paul's Photo of the Month

Postby Paul Heester » Wed 27 Jan 2021, 16:23

Im glad this idea has surfaced. Ive struggled to make any images for the last 6 months. The first lockdown with its better weather helped with some flower photography but Im really not that inspired in the current weather/frame of mind. However, our garden backs onto a large Oak which is home to 3 or 4 grey Squirrels. And today they were particularly playful running all over the tree. On that basis I setup camera and tripod and manually focusing and manual exposure I set out to capture them running around. The below image is the result of 200 images, cut down to 50 and then further cut down to around 35 layers in Photoshop. I havent moved the squirrels at all just layered them on top of each other. It was an interesting experiment and I enjoyed them enjoying themselves.

Your three or four squirrels certainly got around. Imaginative final result.

With spring-like conditions and the crocuses fully out in our garden it seemed foolish not to take advantage. My Sigma 70-300 has a macro mode which throws everything out of focus to great effect so like to lay camera on grass and "hunt" for a nice composition.

Love the soft colour palette and the shallow dof, Paul

March has been low on inspiration for me. Blossom was an obvious target so Ive taken a more abstract approach. Multiple images taken on my phone as the rain came down today. Changed my perspective for a few of them and blended the layers in Photoshop with a tight crop.

For April I found a magpie (?) feather whilst walking through the forest with the kids. I liked the flame-like shapes so colourised it. It looks quite nice in B&W as well though.

May's image is another flower photograph, this time using an LED Panel to give a clean background to this Clematis.

Still continuing to use my LED light panel for June's image. This time I layed it on the floor and used fallen petals from our garden.
