Canon put on a splendid couple of workshops that was a great learning opportunity. Creative Still life with Thea Baddiley provided some simple set-ups for nice results with wine bottles and other props. Raj Khepar's Portraiture with flash to simulate natural light was wonderful, all done with Canon flashes in softboxes or elsewhere.

I was thinking of ways to rescue the Portrait Workshop with model set for Wednesday 4 July 2018 when I remembered the Free Event at Canon's HQ last November 2017 that Barry, Mike F and I were fortunate enough to attend.

This got me thinking. I have one Canon Speedlite 430EX, but also an expensive Pentax AF-500FTZ and another cheaper Miranda Nk-AF 36 Flash.

No softboxes as such but I have two Flash Diffuser Domes with white, yellow and blue covers and a standard Bounce Flash Diffuser for the Canon. Plenty of rechargeable AA batteries from my Fuji S7000 days.

So to get going using the off camera flash techniques we learnt on the Canon day, I just require a Wireless Flash Trigger Set and extra tripods to carry the off camera flashguns.

Would this system do the job?

I do have an unsolicited £30 Amazon Voucher to spend, sent to me by Friends of Bush Park after I presented Encounters in Bushy Park to some 100 members this January.

I look forward to your comments and suggestions, especially as a few of you have suggested a portraiture evening in our recent question and answer email.

Hi Iggy,

Camulet do a very good set of remote triggers. Both Paul and myself use them. Not only will the transmitter (which goes on the hotshoe) trigger a flash attached to a remote trigger, they also have a range of cables which double as a remote trigger to fire the camera.

The main set was about £49 when I bought mine plus you can buy just the slaves to fire additional off camera flashes at about £29 each.

In terms of the actual products, this post by David Candlish is out of date but the principles remain the same and it is possible to identify alternatives as David himself demonstrates is is possiible with his update..

In terms of flash triggers, I use the Yongnuo ones which are inexpensive and have proved reliable.

Camulet and Wex have merged.
Could not find any cheap trigger sets on their website.

David Candilish tutorial http://forums.croydoncameraclub.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=282&p=12710#p12710 is very helpful with all the other gizmos that are required at the best price although they have moved since 2013.

Since both you and Paul already have wifi enabled flashgun systems, as does Mike and possibly Emmanuel, then we could set up 2 or 3 station on a night, if you are willing to use your equipment. They should not necessarily interfere with each other. It should be easier with a Polina type small setup but even a portraiture evening should work would you think?
All we need then is a couple of models for the 4 July, would you agree?

I will probably go ahead myself and purchase the cheapest Amazon wifi trigger system as I am only going to use it once in a blue moon, more for Polina type images at home. i need to spend that £30 voucher.

Would definitely be interested in attending this event. Im sure collectively between all members we have enough light stands, umbrellas, softboxes and strobes to accommodate a few lighting setups for that evening. As for models Im sure we can persuade friends or family members to join us for that evening or even get some models to attend for free (general rule is you pay any expenses and provide them images from the night).

We should persuade members to bring along their own cameras and they could then use the remote triggers and get some experience directing the models.
