Thanks, Dave. I found the original post very useful and used it as a reference when buying my own kit. I did source some of the stuff from eBay as the prices were a bit better than on Amazon.

One area where I did deviate from your list was with the flash triggers and I bought the Yongnuo RF 603 ones. These are well made and worked without problems so far, but are lacking the test flash facility yours have. However, they do have a facility to fire the camera remotely, which might be useful.

So far as Canon is concerned, they come in two varieties, the difference being in the cable used for remote triggering of the camera. The socket for Cnon's consumer models is different to the connector for the enthusiast and professional cameras, hence the two types of leads.
