Re: Night City Scene with bulb problems.

Wow !!! I'd love to be able to take a picture like that!! Thanks, Simon. It's quite simple, just be at the right place at the right time. :) Seriously, I was very fortunate. Skies like that do not come around very often in this country. Typically, as the sun sets clouds gather on the horizon, the s...

Re: Zombie 1

After I wrote my previous post, I remembered the furore about a winner of the National Portrait Gallery's annual prize for a photographic portrait. These days, it is called the Taylor Wessing Prize, but back then it was sponsored by Schweppes. I cannot find a particularly large version of the image,...

Re: Night City Scene with bulb problems.

I would also add that the tenth image in my gallery ("Twilight") shows the blue sky visisble at dusk as well as additional colours. I was fortunate on this occasion as the setting sun created a vey colourful sky.

Re: Zombie 1

No, as in specifically on the image - I saw the white region behind him, toned it down and then thought the bokeh was sufficient to clearly separate the two. For instance, it's not an amusing shape that looks like it's growing out of his head like a chimney. Will try toning it down further, but I h...

Re: Brighton West Pier

David I can recommend Silver Efex Pro - since acquiring version 2 I have hardly produced anything in colour. ;) It works as a plugin for Lightroom, Photoshop/Elements and Aperture. If you select it from Lightroom, it creates a new file to which the mono efects are applied. With Photoshop, it is appl...

Re: Night City Scene with bulb problems.

The brown comes from the orange sodium lighting reflecting off clouds, and black when it's a cloudless night. Though you can even get a blueish cast with a full moon. Mike - do you have an example of a "blue sky" night shot, to show the difference between the black & brown ones here? ...

Re: Night City Scene with bulb problems.

I find this site very useful when comparing prices. Even when using a trade account, Jessops' prices are very high for most items of equipment, although it is still possible to get the occasional bargain. Last time when I enquired, they were not prepared to discount their price, even for the trade a...

Re: Night City Scene with bulb problems.

Hi Simon I have had a quick look at this and from what I can see on Flickr at the largest size, it seems to be sharp. Take a look at the "citi" and "Barclays" signs, which are both very clear. Whilst there is some flare from the signs, this is most likely to be the result of ove...

Re: Zombie 2

Does the lack of eye contact not fit into the idea of looking out of the frame? (mentioned in the Zombie 1 image) Normally looking out of the frame works best when the subject's gaze is to the left or right, rather than down as here. If we were aware of what she is looking at, it might provide grea...

Re: Zombie 1

A zombie on a pub crawl? He was obviously in need of a stiff drink. ;) I thought there was pretty good separation between subject/background in this example I presume that you mean the distance between the subject and at the background at the time of capture. If so, it will not have much bearing in ...
