Gavin Barwell

Postby Mike Farley » Fri 09 Jun 2017, 10:18

Gavin Barwell attended the opening of the club's exhibition last year and a number of us subsequently attended one of his regular tours around the Houses of Parliament. The latter was an enjoyable evening and on the two occasions I met him, I found him to be knowledgeable, willing to engage and amiable. On that basis, which is solely at the personal level, I am saddened that he was not returned to the House of Commons in yesterday's election.

Croydon South is among the safest Tory seats in the country, so it would almost certainly indicate a major shift in the country's governance if that were to change.

No Tears Please:
Defeated MP Gavin Barwell appointed Theresa May's new chief of staff and should hopefully do well in that post.
Ex-housing minister replaces Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, who announced their resignations on Saturday.

I do like Gavin. He really does have a nice demeanor and treated us well when he showed us round Parliament, which we all appreciated.

As a professional politician representing a marginal seat, he would have been aware of the risks. It was always on the cards that he was going to be defeated at some point. I did not think that was going to be the last we heard of him, although I was surprised that he has found a new role so soon. Clearly he is well regarded within the Conservative Party.
