On the other hand, you will be shooting at infinity anyway, so you should be able to switch to manual focus. Just try not to nudge the focussing ring too often

With my eyesight I have a lot of trouble with manual focus but at the distances we're generally talking about I should be okay if I leave it close to infinity (but not beyond )

Initial impressions however are that most birds were too far away for any decent photos this time, even at 560mm.

My swan shot was at the limit of what I could get with the camera and lens combo I was using. Fortunately they are large birds.

This is the original uncropped shot, so that you can see how much I had to remove, around 50% by my reckoning.

Yes, they're big birds but they can move fast - in your shot the swan is close to the left-hand side but you still managed to get some flying room.

I am trying to post reduced size images from my laptop.

I have been to davidc link that Mike kindly sent me: Next, while entering your post on the forum, there is a small tab underneath with "Options" on, and beside it "Upload Attachment". Click upload attachment and you will see it change to two new fields, Filename and File Comment.
Beside Filename you will see a "Choose File" button - click this and it opens a box that lets you browse your PC. In this example, my photo is on the desktop so I select "Desktop", choose the image and hit "Open". You'll now see the name of the file, in my case wheel.jpg, shown below too. Click "Add the file" and the view will change again.

Unfortunately cannot find "Upload Attachment"

I see above. Can I use that?

It's a tab below the box where you type your response.

Note that there is a restriction on image dimensions, 1024 horizontal x 768 height and file size, which is a maximum of 250k. If you need to post anything larger, you will need to link to another site where it is hosted.

Hi Mike
Reduced images to 200KB.

However under Options only have:
Disable BBCode
Disable smilies
Do not automatically parse URLs
Attach a signature (signatures can be altered via the UCP)
Notify me when a reply is posted

Above the box there is Ins for Inset images [ins]hppt://image_url[ins]
Could I use this and how do I identify the image on my computer?

Yes I am joining tomorrow and thanks for updating me today.
I thought that I would like to share a few images taken using a Canon 400D & Sigma OS 70-300mm.
Given my limited camera equipment, I managed to creep in closer to a pair of Canada geese in a b-ywater to get my shots taken as they swam through different water conditions.
