Week 25/52

Postby Paul Heester » Tue 23 Jul 2013, 12:18

Decided to use fruit & veg as an "out of this world" scene for this weeks shot. This is all done in camera using a single strobe and a melon, lime, sweetcorn and some sprinkles raided from the kitchen. Used a pen light I have to add a comet-type trail. My Hobbycraft bought mountboard coming into use again as the background.

lol very nicely done :)
I was going to do something similar although try to do a "scale" version of the solar system then I realised it'd blow up my PC trying to fit in a 4km wide photoshop file!

Cool idea.

Week 26/52

Postby Paul Heester » Mon 29 Jul 2013, 20:34

Sunny day spent at Brands Hatch practicing my panning technique. Alot harder than I imagined. This was shot at 1/160 at F29 at ISO200. I was trying lots of different shutter speeds and generally around 1/200 was sufficient to get some motion blur. However, my hit rate was woeful with panning but you have to practice and I found Brands Hatch to be a very enjoyable place. Probably helps that it wasnt a major event and therefore there was only a few hundred people, rather than thousands.

As much as anything, a PAW, PAD, PESO or whatever is about finding new things to photograph, experimenting and learning. Most importantly, it is also about having fun. Which is exactly what you did here. Well done.

Would Brands Hatch be a good place to go for an outing, do you think?

Thanks Mike. I think there is definite potential for a photography day out. Brands Hatch was really accessible i.e. there are footpaths around most of the course and it has plenty of hills so you get great angles. On this day there were only a few hundred people attending so parking is easy, the stands are mostly empty but there was still plenty of races to enjoy.

I'd have thought you'd needed a longer lens than 1/160, surprising

Glyn Bareham reckoned that 200 is the maximum needed at Brands Hatch when he spoke to us earlier this year.

1/160 was the shutter speed. I dont have the exif to hand but think this was taken at under 100mm. You can get really close to alot of the track :D

Oh dear that's what I get for reading this and posting on my phone :(

I do understand the difference between shutter speed and focal length... honest

Week 27/52

Postby Paul Heester » Tue 06 Aug 2013, 16:01

Tried some levitation this week! My second strobe has arrived so placed one outside the door and one behind me to subtely light my feet and jeans. The trick was achieved with the help of a chair and then taking another image without chair but with strobes still firing. Some careful masking later and here we are.

Strobist info:
One Yongnuo 560 outside at 1/4 turned sideways. One Canon 430ex placed diagonal to feet at 1/32.
