Re: APOY 2019

Last year it started in March and was held over 8 monthly rounds. Entry was via the Photocrowd website and there was a code published in the magazine for one free entry each month. It was also possible to buy up to three entries, although for those having more than one image ranked in the top 30 only the first counted towards their overall score. That was a rule change in response to what happened the previous year. The winner in 2017 was an excellent nature photographer who succeeded by dint of having more than one scoring image featuring his specialism in just a few of the rounds. He did not demonstrate mastery across a range of genres which the organisers were looking for.

There are no details yet for this year but information about last year's competition is still on the AP website. If it goes ahead, it is likely that the topics will be broadly similar. What I found last year was that there was overlap between some of the categories, with landscape images being prominent in the results of four of the rounds.

The latest issue of Amateur Photographer which goes on sale today has details of this year's competition. The theme for the first round is "Mad about mono" and the closing date is 18 April.

Details are now available on the AP website:

It is possible to enter up to four entries per round. One is free using a code published each month in the magazine, the remainder cost a maximum of £8 each.

Last year, I entered just one image per round on the basis that remained true to the original ethos of the APOY competition which was for one image only. This year I might make multiple submissions if I think I have more than one suitable shot. If I should be fortunate enough to get more than one in the top 30, which is a big ask, only the highest scoring will count towards my overall total.

One further bit of information. Anyone who signs up for this year's competition by 31 March can avail themselves of a 51% discount on subscription to the magazine. There is no need to enter the contest, although as previously noted readers do get one free entry per month, just registering is sufficient.
