Shot of the Week April 2020 - Iggy Tavares

S14: Curves

Being marooned at home, I was thinking of using parts of musical instruments such as guitar, violin and mandolin to meet this challenge.
However, I had used the violin two weeks ago and didn’t fancy repetition so early.

After looking to see what else was in my collection, I decided to go for a cut glass vase & bowl in some form of combination.
After trying a few set-ups, I found that although the cut glass did produce a striking image, it did not cut it enough for my satisfaction.

The next day, I started playing around by adding some flowers to the set-up, to add another aspect and some colour to the image.
I was very lucky that a single pink Alstroemeria flower had survived pretty well for two weeks.
This was from the Mothering Sunday bunch that had included white roses and more.

Having a Mothering day flower makes the image a little bit more special.

S15: A Different Angle – Study of a Guitar Headstock

First thoughts were to grab a different view of the street outside our home.
What could I show that was different?
Immediate idea was to lie on the ground in the middle of the road to take a few shots of our street.

Neighbours would probably think that I had gone bananas or worse still I could get run over!
Safer to do something in our front room, I decided.

Wife was playing the guitar.
I waited till she had a break and left the room.
I had an idea and set the guitar up for a quick photo shoot.
Adjusted the light coming into the room by closing all the bottom window shutters.
Left the small top shutters open directed upwards to provide soft light bouncing off the ceiling.

Got the result I had in my mind's eye concentrating on the headstock.
Hence, a view of the guitar from a different angle.

Took the shots on Saturday; so no good reason for submitting late, apart from enjoying the sun in the garden!

S16: Fast Shutter Speed - Darker background

The extra credit was offered for drip water photography and speed of at least 1/1000.
I couldn’t see where to set up and didn’t fancy making a mess inside the kitchen.
I’d much rather be outside in the garden.
Not much in the way of wildlife in the garden apart for a dead mouse and a dead frog. Sad!
A single holly blue butterfly has adopted our holly tree that is in flower.
However, too many reflections of the shiny holly leaves.

I was playing with flowers again.
Towards the end of the shoot, I wanted a darker background for a set-up than I was getting.
With the aperture already at f/8 (max for FZ1000) I reduced the shutter speed to 1/1600.
Got the result I was looking for.
Kept to the brief of Fast Shutter Speed.
Not all kosha did I hear!
In today’s locked down world, its natural to look at a brief in every light.

As if a set challenge every week was not already difficult enough, you are sticking to it in the midst of a pandemic. Got to respect you for that.

Thanks Mike.
I do enjoy the challenge that gets me thinking outside the box.
I would love to wander outside on a walk which I am not doing to keep the peace.
We haven't left the home for four weeks now as we have supermarket home deliveries.
We do go outside at the front for the weekly NHS & essential workers clap on Thursday evenings.
Al least I have our wild garden that is ever changing week by week.
U3A photo challenge on Zoom tomorrow morning is Life & Death! A dozen images to get ready.
Looking forward to CCC Zoom meeting tonight.
Stay safe. All the best,
Iggy

S-17: Sunbeam on a Dandelion's Rustic Oracle

The Challenge was complicated by the task: Soft. Extra credit: High Key
Earlier in the week, I surveyed my garden domain to find possibilities.
The dandelions in seed looked a possibility. So I took a few shots in situ. Not great background.
Next day seeds had all blown away.
Suddenly it was Sunday and image had to be in tonight.
Went down armed with some card and camera.
In an unlikely position, I found not only a dandelion seed pod with all its seed intact, but also a flower and a bud.
Moreover, there was some sun beams that I could turn on and off!!!
Capturing this called for a tripod!!
I found that I could place card behind the plant without disturbing their position or natural habitat.
There was good separation between seed pod and flower.
Hence even at f8 on the fz1000, one was out of focus, as I was just a foot away from the subjects.
Marginal movement of overhanging plants resulted in a sun beam falling only on the seed pod.
I didn’t like the images obtained using white or pale yellow card. So no extra credit for high key.
Happy with the black card.
Good fun working through this challenge.
Got there in the end!!

Thought I would try high key as the challenge had demanded.
Just played around with the sliders.
Nina, feel free to give your comment on the two formats here if you wish!
Stay SAFE,
Iggy
