S1. Welcoming in the New Year

I am kicking off my SOTW 2020 with a self-portrait.
This was done using my mobile phone to control my Lumix FZ1000 from where I was seated.
A YouTube video helped me set all this up.
I could see the framed image on my phone and was able to zoom in or out as necessary.
Apparently, it is possible to control all the camera functions from the phone!
Here I have kept it simple, setting up most functions on the camera manually rather than remotely.

Looking forward to other CCC members taking part in this year’s SOTW 2020.

Happy New Year to All.
Iggy Tavares

All comments welcome.

I much prefer my self portrait shot in 2006 at work.
This was taken with a Fuji S7000 balanced on a pile of books using the camera's timer function!

Our 4 year old grandson received a camera (VTech Kidizoom DUO 5) for Christmas and is having great fun with it, with lots of random experimentation.
Attached is his portrait of me that he shot as a negative. Best left as is!
Our 5 year old grandson is pretty good with his camera and likes making movies, while his 3 year old brother is still learning the trade!

Just a bit of fun. Added 18 Jan 2020.

S2. Leading Lines

Sticking with the SET challenge mode, on Saturday, went to Borough, thinking that I might be able to find some leading lines to work with.
It didn't pan out. I was cutting it fine for procuring image for this photo challenge.

Came back to Norbury Park that looked empty and foreboding on a rather dull afternoon. At least it wasn't raining.
Not much happening with two couples walking along the path.
Things did look up though when a cyclist came along and stopped just off the path giving me time to make him my focal point.
Why had the cyclist stopped? What was he up to? Was he just making a phone call? I could see a story developing.
I kept shooting over the next couple of minutes as the scene opened up and all three subjects could be part of the image.
Lots of "Leading lines" in this one!

Just a lucky break?

Hi Iggy

It seems to me that you are having fun with the challenges and they are taking you into new aspects photography which you might not otherwise experience. You might not be finding them easy, but that is why they are challenges. It can only help improve your photography. And whatever our standard, who does not want to get better?

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your comments.
I am certainly enjoying having the set challenge as it makes the photography that much more exciting & interesting.
I try to think of various options that might fit the bill for each challenge and then see what turns up.
I would hope to keep with the challenges for the duration as long as I know what they are.
Perhaps you should give Set Challenges a go.
Regards,
Iggy

That is not how my photography generally works as very few of my shots are planned. I work better wandering around finding images, which has stood me in good stead so far.

S3 - Yellow daffodils fading into ART

This week's set Challenge is Wabi Sabi.
What is Wabi Sabi you may well ask, just as I did a couple of weeks ago.
Mike kindly sent me a link when I asked him.

Wikipedia's short form:
"In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection.
The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".

My recent work with flowers past their best falls right in to this category!!!
Still had to work at it and combined it with faded light to give it a new twist, specifically for this challenge.

Thus produced : Yellow daffodils fading into ART

By the way, I have added a new portrait image taken by my 4 year old grandson. Please check it out. Good for a laugh. Thanks

S4 - Model - Fill the Frame

This week's set challenge is Fill the Frame.
Several ideas passed through my mind.
Fortunately, The Societies of Photographers 2020 Convention offered a few opportunities.
I was determined to shoot with no cropping afterwards.
A couple of models were available, some in more suitable setups than others.

One model was lit with continuous lighting from two sources.
I pointed out to the photographer that there was a lot of light reflection off the face in his images, but he offered no solution and kept just the same settings throughout.

I didn’t fancy a lot of post photoshop and decided to shoot moving round the model till I got what I was looking for – a head shot virtually filling the frame with least reflection.

Perhaps, I should do a little photoshop tidy up! I will check for a YouTube solution.
