Shot of the Week 2019 – Iggy – February

In keeping with my theme of “Blooming into Art” in our CCC Masters Panel Competition last week, where I was encouraged by the judge’s comments, I have decided to go with colourful stock.
This time though, the flowers are in their prime and not fading glories.

I like how the green at the top matches the vase colour atvthe bottom - it creates waves of interesting colour repetitions. Nice and colourful Iggy !

Hi Laura & Mike,
Thanks for your comments.
I quite like the green cast over the whole image too.

This week's SOTW has a fair amount of work to do and I would much rather watch the rugby and football.

Regards,
Iggy

Had to take a big red cone out of this image.
Would have been easier to have moved it physically before shooting!!
No chance of that though on a busy London street with hardly any room to move.

You have found an interesting character for this week's shot.

Hi Mike,

Definitely an interesting character who I came back to photograph a few times that morning.
She was unfortunately perched on a narrow street corner partly obscured on one side by a parked van and then continually passing pedestrians from two sides.
I chanced life and limb to photograph her from every available angle including middle of the road.
I would have preferred to be further from her to take some long shots to improve perspective but there was no clear unobstructed long shot line.

Hi Iggy

I had a quick look at the EXIF data for the image, which confirmed that you used your camera with a 1" sensor. Unfortunately, that has resulted in the use of a relatively short focal length which, combined with an aperture of f/8, has created a large depth of field. Without having the space to move further away, it was difficult to isolate the subject from the background which would help the shot. While stoppng down does improve image quality, I would have been tempted to shoot wide open. I would expect the lens still to be sharp at the centre with any falloff in resolution being more evident at the edges but that is not where you need it in this instance. Even then, you might still be limited by the choice of camera but at least you would have given yourself the best chance to make the most of the opportunity.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for taking the time to check out the meta data and then to offer helpful suggestions which is much appreciated.
The Lumix FZ1000 has a 24-400mm Leica lens that allow me to frame images in diverse settings which is why I tend to use it a lot. At some settings it offers f2.8. It allows me to set the focus point on the face. Here it was used in aperture priority and 47mm (35mm equivalent) to fill the frame.

Below, during a very short lull in pedestrian traffic, is another image showing the interesting background that I will keep for another purpose. I might work on this in PhotoShop when I have time. Also have the raw file.
Just need to remove that dastardly red cone.

When shooting people in future, must remember to shoot some at f2.8 to obscure the background.

Best wishes,
Iggy
