Club Outing: Historic Dockyard Chatham - 18 July 2022 (POSTPONED)

by Mike Farley
The next club outing will be to the Historic Dockyard at Chatham. It is where many of the Royal Navy's ships were formerly built, including HMS Victory in 1759. The dockyard closed as a naval base in 1984 and is now open to the public. There is much to see and photograph, including three historic warships and a working ropery, all spread across a well preserved 80 acre site. If anyone ever wondered what it is like on board a submarine*, there are tours of HM Submarine Ocelot which was constructed at Chatham and launched in 1962. The dockyard has been used as a setting for historic dramas on film and TV, the best known of which is "Call The Midwife". It is within easy reach of Croydon, all of which makes it a good place to visit for our outing.

One of the highlights of the dockyard is "No. 3 Covered Slip" that features a unique construction with over 400 windows. It provides the opportunity for some striking images.

Well done Mike for trying to organise another trip.
Haven't been there for many years so it should be an interesting day.
All being well please add myself and Ron Barker to your list.
Regards,
Tom

Hi Mike.
As I mentioned during last week's club evening, I have quite a full diary in July, so regrettably I am unable able to join you at Chatham Dockyard on July 18th. I would have loved to have been there, but family commitments mean that this won't be possible.
Regardless, I'm sure that those who will be there will have a great day.

I'm very much interested in the trip to Chatham Dockyard but, as usual, I'll need assistance to get there.

At Wednesday's club meeting, there were suggestions that there would be more support for this outing if the date were postponed until September after the schools have gone back.
If anyone would prefer a later date, simply respond to this thread, preferably by Monday (11 July), to allow an decision to be made in good time.

I've already bought my ticket so 18th is fine by me. Leaving it to September eats into my annual ticket (although I don't know if I'll go again?)!

Looking at the weather forecast for early next week, the September date seems a better option!!

Agreed. The forecast is currently predicting a higher temperature than the previous day for which there is an extreme weather warning. I am postponing the event until September when conditions should be more comfortable and we can enjoy our photography. I will confirm the date in due course.
