#1 Archeological Landscape
Interesting first episode with Archeological Landscape where history and more was difficult to capture in one shot.
Check out first images and see if you can pick out who got knocked out by looking at the images. Unfortunately images are not titled.

Learning quite a lot from judges' comments.

Contestants using Canon cameras where one of the lenses is a 24-105mm and the other is a prime (?).
Don't know the camera model.
Probably mirrorless?

That's a toughie. Not having seen the programme, it is difficult to determine exactly what was in in the brief based on the resulting images. The landscape aspect is a significant omission in the majority. The preview I read said that the contestants were prima donnas who declared they were not interested in shooting landscapes. Lack of enthusiasm for the topic is reflected in their output, I would suggest.

I thought that Jan Düfelsiek's photo was weak, but is the only one which could be considered a landscape. As it appears at the top of the post, it probably was the winner. Robin De Goede's shot took a risk by being blurred but at least showed some creativity. I would have eliminated Danilo Garcia Di Meo.

On the visit to Ostia Antica Rome, the brief from one judge was to capture the past and present in the boundaries of one frame, something that was acknowledged to be rather difficult.
The other judge suggested that the site was just a location or studio to obtain an interesting image, but not a picture postcard.
With this insight, what are your thoughts now.
For the moment I shall not say who got knocked out apart from to consider obvious errors in framing that might have been corrected by cropping (?).

Definitely worth watching Master of Photography!

Hmm, none of that changes my mind about who should have gone out and Danilo Garcia Di Meo's shot could definitely do with a trim. The one which falls most obviously into the "two images" category is Sonia Bhamra's. OTOH, it does at least show the past and present, as requested by one of the judges, while also demonstrating a modicum of artistry with the strong shadow and contrasting highlights. Mind you, on this showing, I would have eliminated most of the contenders ......

A question for everyone else, which is unfair in the extreme considering it is based on just one image. Who will be the eventual winner?

I am not going to identify the contestant that lost out yet, so as not to spoil the surprise for those planning to catch up on the series this weekend.
May do that on Monday.

I rather liked Danilo Garcia Di Meo's image who used the old frame that he found on site to good effect.
I have had the benefit of seeing him shooting some of his images on location.
He had the person walk across to try and capture movement, but must have been using a high shutter speed on continuous shooting mode.
Danilo used his father's Rolleiflex when young, which reminds me of the time I used my dad's Yashica Mat to photograph buildings in Nairobi in 1968.

Also liked Maria Giulia Costanzo's sculpture that she lit with silver foil that she had brought with her.

However, judges liked the simplest image best.

After round 1, I will go for Danilo to win at the end.

Anyone watching Master of Photography 2019???

It will be obvious after that as the eliminated contestant will not have an image displayed for week 2.

Besides, given the lack of input from others, you might be the only person here who is watching the series.

the brief from one judge was to capture the past and present in the boundaries of one frame...
The other judge suggested that the site was just a location or studio to obtain an interesting image, but not a picture postcard.

With those as context, the images make far more sense than when presented as "Archeological Landscape", but I still agree with Mike on the weakness of the images, particularly given the show is called "Master of Photography".

How much time are they given to capture and work on their images?

They are all using the same camera body and lenses - is post-processing similarly restricted, or are they free to do it at home on their own machines?

Contestants are a mixed bag from 20 year olds to a 40 year old and hence with different experiences.
Got to remember that it is a game show too.

I think they had three hours at the site.
This time judges were at the site and checked up on what contestants were doing and offered advice as necessary that was not always accepted.
So a little bit of a workshop type feel compared to last year.

All were given the same Canon body with 24-105 mm zoom and a 50 mm prime.

Perhaps contestant are housed together.
All post processing is done at the centre. Perhaps an hour (?).
Famous photographer comes along to see their best selection and then offers advice which is not always taken.
Images are then submitted for review by the 3 judges with commentary from each.
Judges withdraw to make final selection and then give final commentary and announce the winner and the one leaving the show.

It is a good watch. Need Sky or Virgin to view.

Have watched the previous 3 series because I thought I would get someone out of it but it always felt a bit of a pointless exercise. Having read these comments I will decline this series and suspect I wont be worse of for it. Having a "master of photography" is pointless really as no one is a master in all the numerous styles and subjects available. Notable photographers of our time and before were noted for these very traits.
