Personally, I have been to Scotland in April and October and all those times I have had very decent weather with hardly any cars on the roads and not too uncomfortable to get out and about.
Especially no midges which were always the bane of my life.
I have been in October where the weather was like the south of France, just not as hot.
Regards Wally

The advantage of going before the spring equinox is that sunrise and sunset are at more convenient times. As I have discovered, during April it is still light at 8:30 pm and sunrise is correspondingly early.

Just gathering my thoughts as to possible details for this trip if anyone is still interested.

Firstly, travel by train to Inverness takes 8 hours and is more expensive than the 1h45m flight from Gatwick so dont see any benefit personally on this.

A brief check on the Easyjet website shows travelling on Monday (only day they fly this early, otherwise its 1.30pm) and back on Friday to be under £45 return, which is really good. My thinking here is that a Monday morning flight would give us a leisurely amount of daytime to drive across the highlands and maybe stop for scenery shots along the way rather than one solid drive (which is 3 hours btw).

Obviously car/van hire will be necessary from Inverness airport. Prices for 5 days for a 6 seater are below as a guide. There are higher capacity vans (9 and even 17) but it may be best to hire 2 vans in case people want to travel to different locations. Im happy to drive one of them.

Accommodation should ideally be centered around Portree as it has the widest range of places and eateries in the area and is relatively central. Prices seem to be around £80-£90 per person per room regardless of whether its a B&B or hotel. Havent listed any specific ones here as the choice is wide.

Please let me know everyone's thoughts who would like to come.

Hello Paul theoretically I am interested plus Hilary. The date sounds iffy, we usually get snow in February.
have to see if the weather is going to be any good.

Hi Wally

You're welcome to wait until nearer the time. However, Im intending to book this prior to the end of the year. Personally Im hoping we get snow (as long as roads are passable) as I have very few images of snowy landscapes.

Being on Scotland's west coast and warmed by the Gulf Stream, snow is less likely to occur on Skye than other parts of the country. It is impossible to know, of course, but rain is more ikely to be an issue. The position is not really much better in March and after that the days start to get longer following the Spring Equinox.
