Personally, I have been to Scotland in April and October and all those times I have had very decent weather with hardly any cars on the roads and not too uncomfortable to get out and about.
Especially no midges which were always the bane of my life.
I have been in October where the weather was like the south of France, just not as hot.

The advantage of going before the spring equinox is that sunrise and sunset are at more convenient times. As I have discovered, during April it is still light at 8:30 pm and sunrise is correspondingly early.
