Jane Bown Retrospective

Postby Mike Farley » Fri 29 Jun 2018, 08:16

Jane Bown was a respected portrait and documentary photographer who worked at The Observer for many years. She had a knack for capturing her subjects in a way which others could not and succeeded at a time was newspaper photography was male dominated. It was Bown who through persistence took the shot of the usually camera-shy Samuel Beckett. It went on to become the iconic portrait of him. A retrospective exhibition of her work has just gone on display at Proud Central until 12 August.

Amateur Photographer has some further information, including how Bown took a previously unpublished shot of the Beatles.* Unusually, it was in colour as her camera only had colour film loaded. (Quite why the magazine thinks it was "cibachrome film" is a mystery. Cibachrome was a method devised by Ilford to create colour prints from slides. Someone at AP does not know their photographic history.)

* It is astonishing how many images of them continue to emerge which were never shown when the band were at the height of their popularity. Only their enduring fame has ensured that the shots retain so much interest and significance.
