2 May 2015 - Kent and East Sussex Railway 1940s Weekend

The Kent and East Sussex Railway is holding a 1940s weekend between 2 - 4 May, which is the Early May bank holiday weekend, to celebrate the twin WWII anniversaries of 75 years since the Dunkirk evacuation and 70 years since VE day.

There are twin attractions to this occasion. First off, it is a heritage steam railway. Enough said. The other is that as a re-enactment event there should be lots of people dressed up in period costume who will WANT to be photographed.

I am proposing an outing on Saturday, 2 May, leaving from Shirley Methodist Church at 8:30 am with a view to arriving at Tenterden for around 10:00 am. If we wish to catch it, the first train departs at 10:45 and with the railway is running its full timetable there will be regular services throughtout the day.

Tickets are £17 each and this allows unlimited travel throughout the day. I propose to book mine a few days in advance to allow time for delivery and avoid any queues on arrival. Postage is included in the cost, so there is no benefit in booking as a group.

If you wish to go, respond here and indicate if you are willing to offer a lift to other members as numbers will depend on how many cars are available. I will be driving and can accommodate three passengers. Anyone who receives a lift will be expected to make a contribution to the driver's running expenses.

Count me in. I've never visited this railway but have wanted to. A special event is always a good time to visit but I imagine this is going to be an especially busy weekend.


The following weekend the Bluebell Railway have their "Southern at War" event. Unless you're a member the cost is £20.00 all you can "eat".

I went to this event a few years ago but from photography point of view was disappointed. The problem stemmed from the platforms which are smaller than those on the Bluebell Line, so everyone was very close together and I found it tricky to get uncluttered shots of the re-enactors. However, I did get the shot in this post early on in the day.

Not sure at this time how many members are going on this outing. This is just to let you know that Paul and myself might go earlier than planned and will see you there. We purchased our tickets on-line with a small saving which was a pleasant surprise.

An excellent day out with considerable photo opportunities due to the way that the organisers and friends entered into the spirit of the event (WW2) as can be seen in the sample images below. Looking forward to the next outing.
