4 March 2015 - Nature Competition

Postby Mike Farley » Tue 17 Feb 2015, 19:34

The annual competition for the David Eaves Trophy takes place on 4 March, when the judge will be David Lloyd. Three images are required and the winner will be the person whose entry achieves the highest aggregate score. Your entry can consist of prints or DPIs in any combination, but must be new work which has not previously been entered into any other club competition or the annual exhibition. Images can subsequently be re-used in the monthly competitions and the exhibition. The competition is held as a single class.

Prints should be handed in on the night by 7:45 pm, but DPIs must be submitted either on CD/DVD or USB memory stick at the previous week's meeting on 25th February, or via e-mail to the usual address croydoncameraclub@gmail.com by midnight on Saturday, 28th February 2015.

The usual rules for DPIs apply:

  • Maximum dimensions of 1,024 pixels horizontally and 768 pixels vertically
  • sRGB colour space
  • Image file names should be a two digit number to show the order in which it is to be projected, followed by a space and the title (e.g. 01 Rusty Nail.jpg).

Ideally, prints should be presented set within 50 x 40 cm mounts.

This is an occasion when we are looking for a different style of image from our other competitions, with photos depicting subjects which occur naturally and without indications of human intervention. The club's website states this about the criteria:

"Both the RPS and SPA rules define Nature photography as depicting observations from all branches of natural history. This can include any natural phenomena including geology, oceanography etc. but the inclusion of human or man-made objects is discouraged. The image should convey the essential truth of what the photographer saw at the time it was taken. No radical changes or additions should be made to the original image, whether through darkroom processing or digital or electronic manipulation, except for the removal of minor blemishes or distractions.

All subject matter must be properly identified. Titles should convey the correct common name and/or the Latin name of the subject. “Twee” titles will not help.

Bearing in mind the above, entrants should also note that during a previous year's competition, judge Peter Brandham advised us that, ideally, he is looking for subjects shown complete, together with their natural surrounding wherever possible.

Among the things he did not want to see were:
  • Obvious garden flowers or plants
  • Evidence of the subject(s) having been photographed in captivity (eg Owls tethered to posts)
  • Out-and-out pictorial work (eg flowers with completely black or bland backgrounds)
  • Animal portraits or images showing merely parts of birds, animals, butterflies etc
