Fuji Medium Format Infrared

Postby Mike Farley » Wed 25 Nov 2020, 07:16

When DPReview carried an announcement by Fuji about an infrared version of its GFX100 medium format camera, I was intrigued since I have been using an infrared camera for some years. The press release is short on details but rather than being sensitive just to infrared, the sensor appears to be what is known as "full spectrum". That is a misleading term but most likely Fuji has removed the infrared blocking filter from the sensor so that it can record a limited range of wavelengths either side of the visible spectrum. In theory, that would include ultraviolet except that the coating on modern lenses blocks it*. Instead, filters are placed on the lens to get the desired result, which includes a UV/IR filter to use the camera normally.

An interesting announcement. Except here is the kicker:

"GFX100 IR is designed for forensic, scientific, and cultural preservation applications, and the product will not be made available to general photographers or customers for personal use. GFX100 IR will only be offered by specific, Fujifilm authorized retailers, and sales of GFX100 IR will be subject to a GFX100 IR User Agreement, which sets out the specific terms of use for the camera."

Oh well, I could not have afforded it anyway as a standard GFX 100 retails at £10k body only.

* UV photography is possible but is a specialist activity, not least because human eyesight is susceptible to damage from UV light.
