Lightroom - Thom Hogan's View

Postby Mike Farley » Sat 28 Oct 2017, 09:05

The latest in my roundup of interesting articles on the topic, this is Thom Hogan's assessment of Adobe's recent announcement. It includes a summary of the alternative offerings which could take business away from Adobe. I am with Hogan when he says that there is little option other than to continue using Lightroom in its new Classic guise, for the time being at least.

A couple of points of interest from the article. The word "indefinitely", first used by Adobe in 2013 when it talked about how long a perpetual licence version of Lightroom would be available, has two meanings. It is an ambiguity which Adobe has consistently failed to clarify. Back in 2013 most people were reassured since they assumed it meant "forever", whereas the company actually meant "an unspecified period". It is that realisation which has mainly caused the howls of complaint this time around. Actually, the writing was on the wall in 2015 when Adobe said that new features would only be added to the subscription edition of Lightroom. Once again, people assumed they would be incorporated into Lightroom 7. We now know how that turned out.

Hogan also refers to Macphun as being a company which might end up eating Adobe's lunch. Macphun is in the process of rebranding as Skylum Software as part of its transition from producing software solely for the Mac platform to encompassing Windows as well.
