Earning Money From Photography

Postby Mike Farley » Thu 14 Sep 2017, 08:42

There is money to be made from photography. Whether that is easier or harder these days when technology has made digital imaging so ubiquitous is not an issue I propose to cover here. In the main, we do this as a hobby. When it comes to the financial aspect, our role is to provide an income for others through the purchase of the goods and services we require to create our images.

There might be an occasion when fortune favours us and someone actually wants to use one of our shots. One reason why that might occur is through topicality as a news item. Its moment in the limelight will probably be short-lived and sudden. Your image will have value to others, but only for a brief period. That does not mean that news organisations will want to pay to use your image, quite the reverse. Unless your shot is unique, those organisations will move on to someone else who will give them publication rights without requiring payment. Money only ever seems to flow in one direction.

Your choice in those circumstances will be to decide whether seeing your image published is reward enough. If you do want payment, holding your nerve will soon reveal whether the requester is willing to pay. The downside is that strategy risks the loss of a publication opportunity. The linked story below is of one person's experience. Who knows, the lessons the author learned might help you one day.
