Should the photographs be mounted on a PORTRAIT (i.e. 40w x 50h) or LANDSCAPE (i.e. 50w x 40h) orientated mount?

Sorry, I misread the question, although now I am not sure if I totally understand your meaning.

By convention, an image in landscape orientation would be shown in a 50W x 40H mount and a portrait orientation in 40W x 50H. Ultimately it's photographer's choice, although you would probably need a good reason to go against the norm if the end result was not to look strange. For example, I can visualise a small print in landscape format mounted vertically off centre in a portrait mount. Mounting off centre from the horizontal axis is not unusual and can help the overall appearance, especially if the difference is around 10%-15%, but the sides not being equal would be very unusual.

Thanks Mike, I think you answered the question.

I was asking because of the needs of the exhibition. If the orientation of the mount reflected that of the photograph the consequent frame would be the same. Does it matter that some will be portrait and others landscape. It could make the hanging process a little awkward and produce uneven arrangements (i.e. a panel of, say, three portraits and one landscape wouldn't, in my eye, look neat).

I think it makes life easier if the images are all in the same orientation, but this is not mandatory. Bill would be the best person to ask.

Thanks Mike - sorry to be a pane!

I'll speak with BY on Wednesday.

I've been going through some of my recent trip looking for images for the Exhibition. I think I've found a few which I can submit as mono prints which will please Bill (he needs the money!).

(I know that 'pane' is mis-spelt - it's a play on words, a touch of humour?)

That's exactly the way I read it. Even better when I know it is intentional. ;)

Good luck sorting out your shots for the exhibition. I look forward to seeing the results.
