Dave
Many thanks for what was a very enjoyable evening on Wednesday - I now plan to use some of your suggestions for my own shots. Is there a website or forum where people can exchange ideas for these types of setups?

Re: 13th November - Flashes, triggers & receivers needed!
Hi
Just wanted to say thanks for the practical session last Wednesday. I've been trying to get my head round creative flash for ages and that went a long way to helping me understand how to set up the shot. Even managed to get a few photos I was really happy with on the night.
Keep up the good work!
James.

Glad you enjoyed it
The "strobist" idea basically picked up steam when a chap called David Hobby started this blog - http://www.strobist.blogspot.co.uk/
Now there is a strobist flickr group too - not aware of any dedicated forum but it seems most photography forums have sections dedicated to strobism.

Thanks for the link, some really interesting reading on there and some amazing photos!
Definitely something I'm going to have a go at. Done some off camera flash before but always on a long exposure and firing the flash manually. Just got to get the transmitters and a few other bits off the list you made and I can have a bit of an experiment!
Cheers, James

I'm wondering about finding somewhere outdoors off the beaten path to use as an interesting background then to take "profile shots" for strobist practice. I've run something similar for guys at work, basically photographers shooting other photographers so we don't need to worry about a model (just use each other) and it means we all get practice - if some of the shots are good we also get nice "profile" shots we can use on our websites, business cards etc.
If people are interested we can find somewhere suitable for all! Personally, I want to train with the lights and directing a model so that when I have an actual, proper model I have ideas of what to run through in my head. Applying the strobist lighting ideas to an outdoor photoshoot can produce some fantastic results.

That sounds like a really good idea, once you know where to position the lights to get a particular look/effect it sould be the same every time! Would be good if we could sort something out for getting some practice shots in.
I've ordered my remote triggers, a stand and head so are nearly ready to go! Hoping to get out and do a night shoot with my brother in the next couple of weeks as I wanted to do some long exposures and light painting, was looking at locations around Croydon that aren't too busy and around Fairfield halls there are some good spots which could also work for what you where talking about.
Not sure if I'm going to make the club on Wednesday as I've got work early the next day but might see you there.
