I bought my 100-400 lens second hand. It was in pretty much mint condition and I paid just under £900 for it. There are a number of reputable UK retailers who carry used equipment and it's worth considering.

I've used my 100-400 for dolphin watching and bird watching from a boat and can confirm that you will find anything less than 400mm unsatisfactory unless the creatures are really close and/or really big ! http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/ are excellent and I can recommend their services. Before judging commenced, they stated that they considered finding an interesting location and waiting for something to happen there was not a valid form of photography. Yes, I think many of us were surprised at the judge's attitude towards this sort of shot. I submitted a B&W image that scored 12 in last year's monochrome competition - the judge last year remarked on the excellent range of tones in the image and the capture of light and and texture. However, th...

Very well done ! I spotted the image on PhotographyBlog the other day and recognised it but couldn't immediately place where I'd seen it ! It didn't help that they said the photographer's name was Ross, not Ros... Yet another example of male bias perhaps ? :roll:
