Re: PetaPixel Website Hijacked?

The best way to avoid this would be to install uBlock Origin - and specifically "uBlock Origin" (not anything similarly named), and only by following the installation links listed at https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/#installation (not by searching). uBlock Origin will automatically block ...

Re: Recovering failed hard disk

BUT beware, the software has an auto renew feature with will renew your licence when it expires unless you go into your account and cancel the renewal. ? Are you sure you used PhotoRec as downloaded from https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec ? PhotoRec is funded by voluntary donations, not a mon...

Re: Recovering failed hard disk

If you can read from the the disk, use PhotoRec to recover data. It's free in both senses (zero cost and open source software). It also comes with TestDisk which can help in other situations. I've not used either but PhotoRec is recommend every time I see this topic come up (including from people wh...

Re: The orange house...

Heh, I know that. :) I think it's the sole survivor from an art installation that was originally a half dozen similar houses plonked in ridiculous places around the town, as part of the Folkestone Triennial art exhibition a few years back, highlighting the incongruity between second/holiday homes, t...

AWS certificates are granted automatically and do not involve any verification by Amazon of the user requesting it - this is not abnormal, but it's not proof of anything either. I find it astounding that someone can purchase a certificate without any proof of domain ownership on the part of th...

Re: Club Meetings via Videoconference

As part of the Pro package to which the club subscribes, 1 GB of Cloud storage is included. That sounds a lot, but video can consume a lot of disk space. If we exceed the limit, the club will be charged for the additional storage used. Given that the meeting tomorrow could be up to two hours in dur...

Re: Club Meetings via Videoconference

Did anybody try to connect but not get in? The web client got part-way through then failed without error (even after relaxing security plugins). :( However, it looks like Zoom has an option to record meetings and share the resulting video file with users - if that's possible with the club's account...

Re: Club Meetings via Videoconference

I very much doubt that Zoom is using data from Google for anything other than the stated purposes. That is a sure route to defending an expensive class action in the litigious US. The intent of a company doesn't stop mistakes from happening. Security involves limiting the potential impact of mistak...

Re: Club Meetings via Videoconference

How was Zoom selected? The browser addon has permission to access accounts.google.com - i.e. my Google account - I will not be installing any such software. I don't have experience with video conferencing, but Jitsi Meet appears to run entirely in browser, with no special permissions required - I wo...
